Chapter 13: The Preparations

The night passed uneventfully, to the joy of all those involved. They had managed to fashion some small carts together from the mine to carry the crates of their supplies. Eldroth had done what he could to clean the armor of blood, but the stains would be ever-present. He distributed it to the best warriors in the tribe. He knew who to choose, after all, he had met most of them in combat.

Eldroth slept in the communal hut that night, he couldn’t bear to stay in his home. Not after the events that had taken place. He prayed that he was doing the right thing, he trusted himself, but it never stopped him from doubting his decisions. He slept much better then he anticipated that he would.

The morning came swiftly. When Eldroth awoke he felt refreshed and ready for the journey ahead. He made his way out of the hut and looked around, most of the tribe were awake and getting ready for the trip. Using a few extra carts, they had made a small carriage for the young. There were only about six of them underage, and Amy would ride with them to keep them in line.

Eldroth was just now realizing how resourceful his people were, and it made him proud.

The wolf slowly walked around their small village, taking in the sight of his home, a place he hoped he may never see again. He could remember his entire life here. His time under Alistray, when he and Luna came together in their love, his time with Virgil, his Aluk-Har with Deus in which he became champion, his time with Mur, and the hell they experienced in the mines. They were times he was going to miss, but he was glad to be leaving most of it behind.

As time passed, Eldroth became lost in his memories. The world around you passes quickly when you aren’t paying attention. Suddenly, he felt a hand on his shoulder. Eldroth turned quickly in his startled state, it was Laul.

“Are you ok?” She asked.

“Yea, yea. I’m fine, just remembering.” Eldroth responded.

“It’s a lot to take in isn’t it?” The rabbit said quietly, looking around. It was odd to think that they would be leaving this all behind, not just for her and him, but all of them.

Eldroth stood in silent contemplation for a moment before replying.

“Am I doing the right thing?” He asked.

Laul took a breath, articulating her response. She knew that she would have to be careful with her words.

“I think you are. I think it’s what Luna would have wanted.” She replied. “Now isn’t the time to doubt yourself, Eldroth. There was no wrong decision when it came to this. You did it for the betterment of the tribe, you did it for all of us.”

Eldroth remained silent, he could feel something welling up inside of him. He didn’t do it for them, he did it for himself. Only by false proxy was his tribe involved in his actions, actions that now may damn them all to death.
